“Former Chief Dead at 74”
George Wright, a founding member of the Trafalgar Township Fire Department and its chief for 20 years, died recently at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. He was 74 years of age. Wright was appointed deputy chief of the department on its formation in 1939 and two years later took over as its chief until amalgamation of the Trafalgar and Oakville departments in 1961. Following amalgamation, Wright was a district chief in Number 2 district until his retirement from the department in 1969. Born in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, Wright immigrated to Canada in 1926 and started work as a gardener for Ryland H. New before moving over to the Edgemere estate in 1934. He served as the estate manager until Sept 1977. During his 45 years at the estate, Wright established a hobby of Growing orchids and was often called upon to judge flower shows for the Oakville Horticultural Society. Wright was an honorary member of the Halton Fire Prevention Bureau which he helped establish in 1957 and a member of the Lakeshore Firefighters’ Association from its inception in 1950 until it was disbanded in the early 1960s. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, sons Bob for Mississauga, Ron of Oakville, daughters Rosemary (Mrs. Neil Madill) of Guelph, Dorothy (Mrs. Terry Murison) of Oakville, and four brothers and two sisters.
