The two local residents are wearing Team Canada jerseys as they play for Canada East in the World Jr. A Challenge, a six-team tourna- ment that features some of the top Tier 2 jun- ior hockey players in the world. Its amazing, Hampton said yesterday (Tuesday), a day after Canada East opened its round-robin schedule with a 6-1 loss to the two-time defending champion United States. From watching the world juniors and Olympics on TV, you see all the great players wearing the Canadian jersey. You just feel hon- oured to be on the same page as them, repre- senting your country. Wilson, an alternate captain for Canada East, added, Its unbelievable, the way the team comes together when it puts on the jersey. Optimistic despite rough start The tournament obviously didnt start the way Wilson and Hampton had hoped, but they remained optimistic that their squad could turn things around, beginning with last nights clash with Sweden (a game that began after the Beavers press deadlines.) Honestly, I think any team in this tourna- ment can win if they play their best. All have individual stars on their team. If our team buys into the system and plays for each other, not just for themselves, I think we have a great chance of winning, Hampton said. If not, Canada East already got some satis- faction out of whipping Canada West 7-2 in an exhibition game before the tournament. Both Wilson and Hampton had a goal and an assist in the romp. Hampton, an 18-year-old defenceman with the Oakville Blades, is in his first full year of junior after playing last year for the Oakville midget AAA Rangers. He has recorded eight points in 17 games with the Blades this season. Wilson is the captain of the Blades biggest rival, the Georgetown Raiders. The 18-year-old forward had a breakthrough year with the Raiders last season, notching 67 points in 56 games, and has been even better this year, earning 37 points in 20 games. Already with a scholarship lined up for UMass-Lowell next year, Wilson said the World Jr. A Challenge is preparing him for the next level. Here, everyone youre playing with is great. Going to school, youll be playing with guys like this, he said. Theres lots of exposure here, tons of (scouts) watching everyone, and the crowds here are amazing. Its a lot of fun. Switzerland and Russia are the other teams in the tournament, which will conclude Sunday with gold- and bronze-medal games. The Minor Oaks Hockey Association celebrated its 50th anniversary season with a Gala Day at the new facility. Festivities from the afternoon included live music, clowns, face paint- ing, contests, a free public skate, a 50th anniversary ceremony and a midget AA game between the Oakville Rangers and Stoney Creek Warriors. MATTHEW SHERWOOD / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Oakville is well represented at the Halton high school girls bas- ketball finals, which are being con- tested today (Wednesday) at Sheridan College. All four finals (junior and senior Tier 1 and Tier 2) feature at least one local school. The Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers and St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders are the first matchup of the day, tipping off at 12:30 p.m. in the junior girls Tier 2 final. Aquinas takes on the White Oaks Wildcats in the senior girls Tier 2 final at 2:15 p.m. In Tier 1 play, the Abbey Park Eagles face Miltons Bishop Reding Royals in the junior final, beginning at 4 p.m. That contest will be fol- lowed by the senior clash between the Loyola Hawks and Burlingtons Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Coverage of these games will appear in Thursdays and Fridays editions of the Beaver. HSSAA hoops finals today Pair of Oakville players wearing Canadian colours at Jr.A Challenge
