The Excellence in Planning Awards, pre- sented at Monday nights council meeting, were given to the Town in recognition of the innovation, creativity, professionalism, problem-solving and communications present in their planning for a sustainable community. Councils vision for Oakville is to be the most livable town in Canada and so how we manage growth in our town is a priority in reaching that goal, said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. Our planning services staff met the challenge to create a new official plan that truly expresses the vision our community has for carefully controlled growth. These awards acknowledge that hard work and we are appreciative of the recognition. The policies for the Kerr Village plan were built on years of revitalization plan- ning, the community vision from the 2004 Kerr Village Revitalization Study and exten- sive consultation with neighbourhood resi- dents and business owners. The North Oakville Secondary Plans Implementation Strategy includes a com- pletely new set of standards and procedures that address zoning, urban design, roads, transit, parking, trails, sustainability and parks. The North Oakville Secondary Plans were designed to balance the preservation of nat- ural resources with a sustainable, transit- supportive urban community. The Ontario Professional Planners Institute is the recognized voice of the provinces planning profession.
