The Supporting Students Strengthening Schools Christmas Giving campaign is aimed at help- ing a student who may otherwise go without. The foundation is encouraging residents to celebrate the season by making a donation in honour of friends or family. "When you choose to help chil- dren have the best possible learn- ing experiences, you are enriching their lives," said Pat Wright, execu- tive director of the Halton Learning Foundation. "We encourage everyone to make that special donation in hon- our of friends and family and help eliminate the barriers to learning for students, especially during this holiday season." The foundation has offered examples of donation levels. Twenty dollars will provide a back- pack and school supplies for an ele- mentary student; $30 can repre- sent new running shoes for an ele- mentary student; $35 covers the cost of one ukulele for an elemen- tary music class; $50 buys winter boots, hats and mitts; $75 purchas- es a Recess Revival Kit, which includes a skipping rope, soccer ball, small balls, hula hoop, activity cards and basketball. "Approximately 10,000 children in Halton live in poverty. As a result, many children are unable to take advantage of the variety of learning and life opportunities that many of us take for granted. Children of all ages arrive at school with empty stomachs or without warm clothing and find it difficult to focus on learning," stated a Halton Learning Foundation press release. Visit www.haltonlearningfoun- dation.ca/ to select your area of support and make your donation. You can also call 905-335-3665, ext. 3207. The Halton Learning Foundation exists to acquire and allocate resources to enrich educa- tional opportunities and eliminate economic barriers to learning for Halton District School Board stu- dents.
