He was taking a full-time co-op program with the company Johnson Equipment in hopes of eventually becoming a forklift technician. Sharons presentation brought more than a few students to tears, including Lizzy Olson, one of McGregors close friends. He was just the most amazing person Ive ever met. He was the sweetest boy ever and would do any- thing for anyone when they needed him, she said, choking back tears. He was a funny guy. I had a cou- ple classes with him and he was def- initely the class clown. McGregors girlfriend, Grade 10 student Chelsea Hendricken also spoke briefly about him. I think Matthew was the most important thing thats ever been in my life, she said. I love him and I know hes still there. Sharon said the events that led to her sons death unfolded Friday evening, March 26. McGregor had just attended a party and, as his friend had nowhere for him to sleep, had actually walked home. Sharon said early Saturday morning her son decided he needed something from the store and made the fateful drive. At McCraney Street East, McGregors car left the road and struck a tree, near Kirstie Court. McGregor was pronounced dead at the scene while an 18-year-old passenger was transported to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Sharon said allowing McGregors crash scene to be shown and speak- ing to people about it is her way of trying to make his death mean something. Id actually kind of been asking the universe, might sound a bit stu- pid, for a sign because I was lost. I didnt know what to do with my life and within an hour I got a phone call from the police and I just took that as a sign, said Sharon. I have to make this worthwhile. There has to be a reason why Matthew has died. The only thing I can think of is to save somebody elses child.
