Setting a season high for goals in a game, the Oakville intermediate AA Hornets hammered the Hamilton Hawks 6-0 Sunday in Provincial Womens Hockey League play. Captain Lindsay Grigg had two goals to lead the Hornets, while Alex Chisholm, Evelyn McLean, Anissa Gamble and Tricia Kirk added sin- gles. Christine Gallant and Hanna Moher each contributed two assists and Rebecca Clark stopped all 17 shots she faced to earn the shutout. We all have a lot of heart, said Ziesmann, who plays for the Hamilton Hawks in the Provincial Womens Hockey League. We all care about it and we work hard all the time. Loyola has also managed to avoid the rebuilding phase that most teams have to go through at some point. Last years champion, T.A. Blakelock, dropped to Tier 2 this year after losing many of its veterans. We lost a lot of key older players but even bringing in younger girls, the way Mac runs the team, we always do well, Ziesmann said. McNamaras not sure why Loyola always seems to have a young group of players ready to step in and fill the void. Sometimes I think it might be demographics, he said, but then Holy Trinity and Abbey Park would be getting the same (caliber) players. Neither of those neighbouring schools have ever reached a Halton final, which leads McNamara to a simple conclusion. Maybe its just pure luck. If there is an explanation, it could be the teams past successes. The girls that come in are really excited about playing for our pro- gram, McNamara said. It gets passed sister to sister. Hopefully when the graduates leave, the way they talk about the hockey team gets to the younger kids and they want to be a part of it. Already this year, Loyola has outscored its opponents 21-1. Even without one of its offensive leaders, Katie Fergus, Loyola still had plenty of firepower to beat Notre Dame the team the Hawks edged in triple overtime for the 2009 Halton title. In addition to Ziesmann, Emily ONeill had a goal and two assists and Nicole Collaton and Andrea Benac each had two points. Defensively, the Hawks are anchored by blueliner Mia Favretto and the goaltending tandem of Emily Robinson and Jeanette Gamble, who have allowed just 17 goals in their last 15 league games dating back to last year.
