By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Town council has approved a Development Charge Bylaw settle- ment that will see a development charge of $18,582 levied against devel- opers for every single or semi- detached dwelling unit they build in Oakville. The Town collects development charges from developers to pay for the infrastructure needed to support new growth. The settlement, which was approved during Mondays council meeting, is actually $3,100 less than the $21,682 development charge bylaw council passed on Aug. 10, 2009. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton, how- ever, sees the settlement as a victory, pointing out the settlement increases the development charge for a single family dwelling by approximately 40 per cent over the previous 2004 devel- opment charge bylaw. Six years in prison were added to the sentence imposed earlier on Saad Gaya, 23, of Oakville, after fed- eral prosecutors argued the initial penalties were too lenient. Another convicted member of the group, Saad Khalid, 24, of Erin Mills, also had six years added to his sentence. The higher court also ruled that a Meadowvale man described as the mastermind of the group, which plotted to launch deadly attacks on Parliament and detonate bombs in downtown Toronto, will not have his life sentence reduced. Gayas sentence was increased from 12 to 18 years, while Khalid's sentence was upped from 14 to 20 years. Given credit for pre-trial cus- tody, Khalid's sentence works out to 13 years in prison and Gaya's 10 years.
