and acceptance throughout North America was unani- mous, as well as more invest- ment in social services to cre- ate more accessible jobs and programs to get people on their feet. Regarding North American economies, teens understood the economies of Canada and the U.S. are interrelated. One student mentioned they believed in less taxes and more private companies, stat- ing that The government will always make things worse by getting involved. The majority also believed recession recovery is immi- nent and the Canadian and American dollars will be near- ly on par. Students had more vary- ing opinions on the subjects of politics and governance. One teen expressed vehe- mently People will slowly vote for more conservative parties, because the whole left-wing era is coming to an end. People are realizing they cant rely on the government anymore. Yet, some held the belief tat Canada will continue to exhibit socially liberal laws, such as, Prostitution will become legal, with a union and benefits. The concept that Canada should take more of a leader- ship role regarding foreign issues was also popular. In the case of pop culture, the general agreement was true music will maintain an under-appreciated role, and mindless drivel will continue to dominate the charts. Students noted this should not be and questioned the talents of Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus and Ke$ha. By interviewing a number of high school students, I was able to gather their opinions on changes North America should and/or will see in 2011. My questions spanned top- ics from the environment, pol- itics and economy to social development and pop culture. Students' consensus on environmental conditions was that resources will continue to be steadily depleted. Yet, due to environmental awareness, individual con- sumption may decrease. Many believed taxes and govern- ment regulations should be implemented to pressure peo- ple into conserving; however, one teen took a different stance: No one should be taxed for something that will happen anyways. Ice ages have happened when humans did- nt even exist. Socially, students tended to believe poverty rates and human rights violations will either increase or stay the same.
