It's not your typical request, but this isn't your typical escapee. Mississauga Humane Society (MHS) volunteers are among many people on the hunt for Nikita, a 70-pound German Shepherd-cross who ran away from her west Mississauga foster home just before Christmas. Nikita had been at the Tenth Line/Eglinton Avene area home for six weeks, along with her littermate, before she man- aged to break free from her leash and collar and dash off. She had been rescued from a puppy mill near Quinte, along with some 200 other unsocialized dogs. Nikita is afraid of people and loud noises, said MHS spokesperson Carla Costa, among those organizing a dedicated search effort on Saturday (Jan. 8) for the dog. The group will concentrate efforts in the area of Hwys. 407 and 403, where Nikita was spotted on New Year's Day. Shes not the type of dog who's going to come if you call her, said Costa. Our best bet is to spot her, then hope she finds her way into the trap (which is baited with food). Volunteers have been manning the trap, placed in the area of the most-recent sight- ing, every two hours in case another animal is inadvertently caught. Costa said the search has been draining. We are burning out, she added. Its not like life stops on this end. People are still call- ing with all the other problems. The search is being co-ordinated by Michelle Nadon, whos with Cause For Paws Animal Rescue. Nadon urges people who believe they've seen Nikita to call Mississauga Animal Services at 905-896-5858 or the Oakville Humane Society at 905-845-1551. Organized search for missing dog
