On Sunday, it is having an open house for all members of the com- munity, legion members and veterans that will include a showing of video of prior veterans from the Second World War and the Korean War, Nieuwpoort said. The open house will be from 1-7 p.m. The BIAs in town are being asked to show support by doing the same on the main streets. As the combat mission in Afghanistan transitions into other military activities, The Royal Canadian Legion is extending a "heartfelt thanks" to those service men and women, and their families, who have served with distinction and sacrificed on behalf of Canadians during these past several years, states a release on the Legion's website. "Their contribution to the well- being and care of another countrys f populace is a tremendous reflection o Canadas efforts toward maintaining global peace and we are proud of the way you have represented us," noted Patricia Varga, Dominion President, The Royal Canadian Legion. It was previously reported that the Oakville and Bronte branches of the Royal Canadian Legion were planning a Welcome Back day on Aug. 21. Unfortunately, they are unable to hold the event at this time, but are looking to reserve a day for the soldiers some- time in the fall. For more information, contact the Oakville branch at 905-845-6271, Bronte at 905-827-4722 or visit www. oakvillelegion114.ca and www.bron- telegion.com. The Oakville branch will also adorn the Trafalgar Cenotaph during the week, Walker said, but it is not known what day it will happen. We are trying to arrange to have yellow ribbons provided to the Town so they can put them on their civic buildings. Hopefully it will expand, said Walker. Adas Flowers has donated a length of the yellow ribbons that can be picked up at its shop for those who want tie them around their property to show support and appreciation for the troops' return, Walker said. The Lloyd family in Oakville, that saw their son, 24-year-old Master Corporal Duncan Lloyd return from Afghanistan last month, has also donated some ribbons. The Bronte Legion is also plan- ning on tying ribbons around signage denoting Veterans Highway this week, and possibly nearby churches, said Mary Nieuwpoort, membership chair at Bronte Legion. It doesnt have to be a special yel- low ribbon, it can be any yellow rib- bon they can pick up at any store, just as long as they're showing support, thats all that really matters, said Nieuwpoort. It could be anything yellow thats hanging outside their home. Along with putting up yellow rib- bons, the Bronte Legion will be involved in two events this weekend to honour the vets. On Saturday, Aug. 20, the branch is going to the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) in Toronto for Warriors Day to celebrate veterans of current and past wars. A bus will leave the Bronte Legion at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $10 when boarding the bus.
