Visit www.oakville.ca East Pier at Oakville Harbour closed to public access until late October 2011 Thank you for your patience as we work to rehabilitate the East Pier, one of Oakville's most popular landmarks for both residents and visitors. Over the past few years coastal engineering reports have been completed to determine any shifts in the pier foundation. During the assessment in spring 2011, the pier was found to be in state of serious infrastructure decline that requires considerable refurbishment. While the pier was originally constructed in the late 1800s, the last major rehabilitation was completed in 1947. Rehabilitation to the pier includes placement of armourstone rock protection, installation of new steel reinforcement and stone within the pier, and replacement of the existing concrete cap. New safety ladders will also be installed. West Pier parking lot closure due to reconstruction of East Pier The West Pier will be used as a staging area for delivery of materials and barge traffic. Access to the West Pier will be limited. The parking lot at the West Pier will be closed daily from Monday to Friday from early August to late October 2011 to allow truck access and delivery of materials that will be barged across the harbour to the East Pier. Depending on the work schedule, Saturday parking lot closures may also be in effect. Additional parking can be found adjacent to the washroom building at Tannery Park. I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Jack. Indeed, you can take comfort in knowing the nation mourns your loss. Let me conclude by saying this: If Ive tried to bring anything to fed- eral politics, its the idea that hope and optimism should be at their heart. We can look after each other better than we do today.... Jack Layton, July 25th, 2011. Halton MP Lisa Raitt The integrity officer did not report any credible rationale for Mayor Burton cancel- ling these meetings. Simply put, the report is full of holes and failed to recommend any sanctions to Council to help prevent similar breaches from hap- pening again. Thus far, Council voted only to receive the report, and the Town of Oakville media release on its website fails to mention any of the above. Combined with the Beaver story, the average voter would naturally assume that no rules were broken and all is well at Town Hall. If they believe that is true, to avoid fur- ther embarrassment to our town, Council should revoke the Code of Conduct for Councillors and remove it from the town website, instead of pretending it is respected and enforced. Terence Young, Oakville MP Oakville MP critical of report Continued from page 6 Remembering Jack Layton Continued from page 6 A condolence book is available for signing at the Town Hall front foyer for people to express their sympathy in memory of former NDP leader Jack Layton, who passed away Monday.
