The Oakville Chamber of Commerce orga- nized the debate. All registered candidates were invited and five attended. They were Phil Buck (independent), Ted Chudleigh (PC), Indira Naidoo-Harris (Liberal), Nik Spohr (NDP) and Gina Van Den Burg (Freedom). The 24-year-old Spohr admitted to being young, but said, I think weve seen what age and experience have done for us over the past few years in terms of economic policy. He said there is insecurity for the future for healthcare, retirement, jobs, economy, gas prices and rising personal and government debt. Freedom Party candidate Van Den Burg said she is offering people, who want change, an alter- native to the mainstream parties. FPO is formed on the principle that the pur- pose of government is to defend every individuals freedom, not to restrict it, she said. She said the government is increasingly controlling the lives of Ontario residents and said her party would rescind invasive government policies. The incumbent MPP, Ted Chudleigh, said this election is about jobs and taxes. He advocated boosting the economy by boosting the business sector to create new jobs. y g j pp yB creatin more obs and more o ortunit for Ontarians, we will broaden the taxpayer base and reduce the burdens on individual taxpayers, he said. Remember that every new job is also a new taxpayer. He said Ontario currently has a spending problem, not a revenue problem, running deficits of $16 billion per year.
