Mandel will perform at The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, beginning at 8 p.m. The stand up comic has been in show business for more than 30 years. Hes known for such television gigs as being a judge on Americas Got Talent and hes received an Emmy Award nomination for his role as the host on Deal or No Deal. Among many other shows, the Toronto- born entertainer is also recognizable as being the starring voice on the childrens cartoon Bobbys World, a show he created. The stand-up comic came to the atten- tion of the U.S. public during the six-year run, in the 80s, of the medical drama televi- sion show, St. Elsewhere, on which he played Dr. Wayne Fiscus. Howie Mandel at The Centre Pastel artists exhibit work in the city National based and Oakville-incorporated Pastel Artists Canada is putting on a juried art show that opens this Thursday, Sept. 29 in Etobicoke. The 2011 Open Juried Exhibition, Purely Pastel will take place in the Neilson Park Creative Centre. The show runs until Oct. 16. The show features 54 paintings by 36 artists using dry pastels. Gallery hours are Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., plus in the evenings on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free. The variety show will benefit the Oakville organization along with the Toronto Cat Rescue. The show is hosted by comedians Blair Streeter and Marianne Gibson. Comedy benefits cat rescue Intrada Brass of Oakville is starting its concert season with a free benefit concert for The Salvation Army in Oakville. The concert will take place Saturday, Oct. 1 at St. Johns United Church. There is no admission fee, but the orchestra is asking people to give a free- will offering for Salvation Army. The entire proceeds will be donated. Along with the benefit concert, the band will be launching its seventh CD, titled The Stardust Ballroom, with music celebrating the big band era. Soloists include Kevin Turcotte on the trumpet and Alastair Kay on the trombone. The music on the new CD includes New York, New York; Twelfth Street Rag; Trumpet Blues and Cantabile; An Ellington Portrait; and Summertime.
