A tentative deal between the two parties was reached Friday, only a few hours before the unions strike dead- line, and ratified by the CAW member- ship Sunday with more than 78 per cent voting in favour. It was approved by Town Council Monday. We are extremely pleased we were able to mutually agree on a settlement on Friday of last week prior to the strike deadline, said Dave Bloomer, Town commissioner of infrastructure and transportation. Paulo Ribeiro, Canadian Auto Workers National representative, who oversaw negotiations, said some high- lights include wage hikes of approxi- mately two per cent a year for nearly three years, retirement incentives for some members, and better language around consideration given to injured workers and scheduling. Under the previous contract, Oakville drivers earned about $23 an hour. The agreement will be valid until Jan. 31, 2014 and affects 160 bus drivers, cleaners and mechanics. The last contract expired May 15. The union appreciated the over- whelming support shown by the members towards the bargaining committee, said Ribeiro. It was a frustrating process because we felt we wasted a lot of days where bargaining was not taking place, but in the 48 hours prior to the deadline, the employer changed their attitude at the bargaining table and we were able to reach the totality of the agreement in that 48 hours. Bloomer said the two parties tried to accommodate each others sched- ules whenever they could. There was just that complication of trying to accommodate everyones schedules, said Bloomer.
