Six gold for Russell at Canada Cup Dolphins Swim Club member Sinead Russell won six gold medals and set several meet records at last weekend's Canada Cup swim meet in Etobicoke. Russell swept the open women's freestyle and backstroke events, winning the 50-metre, 100m and 200m distances in both disciplines. Her 50m and 100m freestyle and 100m and 200m backstroke times were meet records. Oakville Aquatic Club's Zack Chetrat added wins in the open men's 100m and 200m butterfly. Annie Harrison earned bronze in the open women's 400m individual medley. SPORTS SBRIEFS The 21-year-old receiver tied a Vanier Cup record with 12 receptions, helping the McMaster Marauders to a dramatic 41-38 double-overtime win over the Laval Rouge et Or in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport football championship game. Babic, who averaged slightly more than five catches per game during the regular season and playoffs, finished the Vanier Cup with 135 receiving yards. McMaster overcame blowing a 23-0 halftime lead and missing a potential game-winning field goal at the end of regulation to win its first Vanier Cup title in school history. Raiders reach q-finals at OFSAA hoops The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders weren't feeling any shame about their two losses at last week's provincial girls' basketball championships. Aquinas reached the championship quarter-finals at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) double-A tournament in Brockville, finishing with a 2-2 record. Both of the 15th-seeded Raiders' losses came to teams that went on to earn medals. "I'm very pleased," said Aquinas coach Mike Giammichele. "Our goal was to reach the quarter-finals or win the consolation championship." After opening the tournament with a 48-27 loss to St. Francis, the Raiders doubled up Denis O'Connor 64-32. Aquinas then downed St. Ignatius 44-40 before being eliminated with a 49-34 loss to Barrie Central. Kayla Celestini led the Raiders in scoring against St. Francis and Barrie Central, while Nycole Lopes was Aquinas' top scorer in the wins over Denis O'Connor and St. Ignatius. King's makes provincial consolation semis The King's Christian Collegiate Cavaliers were consolation semifinalists at the OFSAA A girls' basketball single-A tournament in St. Catharines. King's went 1-3 at the competition. The 14th-ranked Cavaliers fell 29-23 to Penetanguishene and 49-20 to La Jeunesse, then downed Walkerton 33-24 before dropping a 41-25 decision to M. Bruyere. Adetoriola Odentunde was King's top scorer against Bruyere, Penetanguishene and Walkerton. Marya Van Beilen and Sarah Skelding both had six points versus La Jeunesse.
