Until Friday, Fareshare is holding a Christmas food drive to support those in need. This is the volunteer organization's 23rd year of supporting families in the community. "We want to get the maximum amount of food... donated to us because we would like to give our clients as much food as we can -- not limit it to one can or two cans," said volunteer executive director Dudley Clark. "We can never have too much because we will distribute what we have. If we have a lot, we are going to give our clients a lot more." "Easter is not going to be until April. From the beginning of the year right through to Easter, there are no food drives going on. (People) are living on the donations that we collect this month," said Clark. "There is a certain amount of food coming in regularly -- week in and week out -- but the big quantities come in during the food drives. This year, Fareshare has seen an average of 353 families -- serving more than 1,100 people per month, slightly down from last year. Fortyone per cent of its clients are children. While all non-perishable donations are welcome, Fareshare particularly welcomes canned salmon, canned pasta sauce and pasta, canned potatoes and peas, canola oil, instant coffee, regular tea, chunky stew, side dishes of rice, pasta and potatoes and laundry powder. Cash donations are also accepted as the food bank uses the money to buy items should it run low, as well as purchase fresh foods like milk, meat and produce. Donations can be dropped off at the food bank located at 1240 Speers Rd., Unit 6, between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday to Saturday, in addition to all Oakville fire stations and in all Oakville supermarkets where collection bins have been provided by Fareshare. Scheduled Tree Maintenance Near Hydro Lines Please be advised that Oakville Hydro has retained the Town of Oakvilles Urban Forestry section to carry out regularly scheduled tree maintenance in various neighbourhoods abutting hydro lines. Beginning in January, Oakville residents may notice forestry staff pruning trees near hydro lines. This maintenance ensures the safety and security of the hydro supply by establishing necessary clearances between hydro wires and any trees in the immediate proximity. It is possible that sap may run from the ends of pruned branches of birch and maple trees. Please do not be alarmed, as this will not cause injury to the trees. Some hazardous trees may have to be removed as a last resort when there are no alternative techniques such as pruning, cabling, or wrapping to minimize safety concerns. For residents with hydro lines located in their rear lots, staff will need to gain access through your property to the Hydro easement. When possible, we will notify homeowners before entering the property. Under normal growth conditions, trees beside hydro wires will not be pruned for another three years.
