Park grad finished the race in one hour, 54 minutes and 30 seconds, 23 seconds behind fellow Canadian Brent McMahon and 54 seconds behind race winner Tyler Butterfield of Bermuda. "I have mixed feelings about the race," Jones said. "Similar to the Pan Am Games, I came into it with the expectation of winning so I'm a little disappointed that I wasn't able to do that. "It was another good day for the Canadian men and Olympic qualifying," said McMahon. "We are staying on track and Kyle and I are doing what's needed to be done. We are still on path." The 27-year-old Jones finished fourth at the Pan Am Games after winning three International Triathlon Union races earli- er in the season. Jones was sixth coming out of the water but lost two minutes to Butterfield on the bike. He posted the second-fastest run time but couldn't overcome Butterfield's lead. "It's not often we race so early in the season, but I felt really fit coming into the event," Jones said. "This was a good reminder that it's tough to come from our Canadian winter and perform well in a hot race, but overall I'm happy and the season is off to a good start." Jones' next race will be in Australia at the end of March. Van Koeverden athlete of year finalist Adam van Koeverden was one of three finalists for the 2011 Canadian Sport Awards male athlete of the year. Figure skater Patrick Chan and skier Eric Guay were the other finalists. Chan won the award, the True Sport Foundation announced yesterday (Tuesday). Van Koeverden won the gold medal in the K-1 (kayak singles) 1,000-metre event at the world championships. It was van Koeverden's second world championship gold, having won the K-1 500m in 2007. Both the Thunder's losses in the finals came at the hands of the Vortex. At the 13U Provincial Cup, the players' first Ontario Volleyball Associationsanctioned tournament, the Thunder defeated the Niagara Rapids, Etobicoke 381, Hespeler Scorpions and Aurora Storm Typhoon before dropping the final. In Brampton, the Thunder downed Ms. Pakmen, InterClub and Etobicoke in pool play, defeated Ms. Pakmen 12U in the quarter-finals and beat Etobicoke in the semis. Oakville then fell 25-11, 25-22 in the championship game. Members of the Thunder are Jamie Jang, Sammie Hayes, Laura Madill, Sophie Klyssen, Stephanie Semplonius, Alex Kells, Kaitlyn Hapke, Riley Robillard, Caitlyn Baillie, Tiffany Tos, Manuela Zapata and Genevieve Armstrong.
