IT'S NOT HOW YOU START, IT'S HOW YOU FINISH: Atom AA Rangers capitalize in Ottawa The Oakville atom AA Rangers rang in the new year by being the first-ever Rangers squad to win a championship at the prestigious Bell Capital Cup tournament in Ottawa. Oakville opened the tournament with a 1-1 tie against the Kanata Blazers before rattling off five consecutive victories to capture the title of the 22-team AA division. The gold-clinching victory -- a 4-3 win over the Aurora Tigers -- took place at Scotiabank Place, the home ice of the Ottawa Senators. The Rangers' other earlier wins came over the Ottawa Valley Silver Seven (4-1), Dallas Alliance Bulldogs (2-1), New Hampshire Northern Cyclones (2-1) and Whitby Wildcats (2-0). Oakville also defeated Nepean 4-1 in an exhibition game on the opening day of the tournament, meaning the Rangers played seven games in a five-day span. "I am very proud of our team's hard work and dedication in accomplishing our goal of winning this tournament," said Rangers head coach Elmo Nasato. "the team played outstanding and each player contributed to the championship." Novice AAAs collect first tournament gold After losing their first two games at the recent Detroit Carhartt Invitational Tournament, the Oakville novice AAA Rangers rebounded to win their next four contests and claim gold. Oakville's final three victories came in one-goal fashion, including a 2-1 win over the Florida Everblades in the championship game. The Rangers beat the Illinois Falcons 3-2 in the semifinals after edging the Markham Waxers 3-2 in the quarter-finals. Oakville managed to kill off a 6-on-3 man disadvantage in the final minutes of the quarter-final. The Rangers' other win came over Compuware, a 5-1 decision to conclude the round robin. The tournament title was the Rangers' first of the season. Members of the team are Luke Cosentino, Alex Volante, Lukas Moreau, Ryan Abraham, Calum Chau, Johnny Brace, Seth Dragojevic, Cade Courage, Jack Natyshak, Nicholas Howden, Josh Bloom, Kevin Henstock, Hunter Greenhalgh, Tara Blackburn, Declan Ride, Cedric Smith and Aaron Maddock.
