23 · Friday, February 17, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Celebrate Family Day together (NC)--In Alberta, Ontario, and Saskatchewan we are fortunate to observe the statutory holiday Family Day on the third Monday of February. 2008 marked the first year this holiday was put into place. One of the main reasons this holiday was introduced was to break up the time between the Christmas and Easter holiday, however the emphasis was on spending quality time with your family. Here are a couple of ideas on how to make the most of this time with your family. Host a Family Potluck: Invite all relatives, or close family friends living in the area to join you for a potluck dinner. If everyone brings something, it lifts the burden from just one person and ensures no one has to spend the entire day in the kitchen. View Family Memories: Spend some time with your children watching family movies or looking at family photos. This is a great time to review your children's accomplishments and see how much they have grown. Make a Difference in Another Family's Life: As a family, select a charity such as Christian Children's Fund. By logging on to charitable websites like www.ccfcanada.ca your family can make a difference in the life of a child who is suffering in extreme poverty. Together, you can select a one time gift from the online catalogue or sponsor a child on a monthly basis. By allowing your children to be part of this decision you will not only teach them compassion for others, but it will give you an opportunity to show them how fortunate they are for the family they have. Plan a Family Outing: Visiting a museum or local festival is a great way to spend time as a family as well as get out of the house. Many cities host special events for families during this holiday. Businesses such as schools, banks and government offices close for this holiday; however, most restaurants, malls and tourist attractions stay open. Be sure to call ahead to ensure they are open before showing up.
