www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, March 1, 2012 · 10 Region asked to prepare housing report card Continued from page 1 is upon us. Let's work together to change NIMBYism to YIMBYism: Yes, in my backyard." Brown said the Region could be in a position to create more affordable housing units by this summer. "The urgency is now, not something that can wait to Jan. 1, 2014, to conform to provincial guidelines." Brown asked that the Region commit to cutting the assisted housing wait list in half by 2015 and eliminating it by 2020, and suggested that engaging with the private sector great 24-24-24 after thanksgiving March 2-4 could move the process along faster. However, regional staff said while the strategic review is underway, they're in a position to put somewhat of a dent in the assisted housing waitlist. Halton will receive $10.7 million from the Province from 2012 to 2015 as part of the Investment in Affordable Housing program -- $4.4 million will be received in 2012/2013. The funding will support the development of new and converted rental units, down-payment assistance, rent and renovation subsidies. The Region's 2012 budget also supports 220 new rent subsidies. Regional council also committed to building 60 to 80 new assisted housing units per year in this year's budget. Councillor Marianne Meed Ward asked staff to prepare a report card for this week's council meeting -- where the timeline is up for approval -- showing the housing targets the Region has set since its initial 2006 comprehensive housing strategy versus its actual achievements. The Burlington councillor also raised concerns over the type of housing that's considered affordable -- pegged at a $308,000 unit in Halton. "Developers are building single-bedroom apartments at that price and calling it affordable," said Meed Ward. Brown said since the 2006 housing strategy was implemented, 355 new assisted housing units have been built at a cost of $43.6 million, averaging $123,000 per unit. "With 75 per cent of our wait list looking for single bedroom accommodation, proposals have been shared with regional staff, faith groups and interested developers who can create new, comfortable single units for less than $50,000 per unit."
