MICHAEL IVANIN / OAKVILLE BEAVER OPEN HOUSE Leading by example: Recipients of Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year nomination certificates in Oakville, from left, Sloane Wilson and Katrina Pacher, and Julia Mogus, and her sister Emma Mogus. Junior Citizens recognized A quartet of Oakville girls were nominated as Ontario Junior Citizens of the Year, administered annually by the Ontario Community Newspapers Association (OCNA). Two of the local girls were recognized for their worldwide efforts to curb childhood obesity. Katrina Pacher, 13, and Sloane Wilson, 14, have become YouTube sensations for their channel and website, Fit for a Feast. From a young age, the girls began producing instructional videos, teaching children about dance, fun activities and nutritional cooking. The channel has reached approximately 20 million views. The two girls show off their dance moves on camera. Furthermore, there are videos of various sports and children's activities. Featured on the website are various Oakville locations and organizations, including the Oakville Gymnastics Club, a martial arts centre, a fencing centre, a soccer club and a local restaurant. With more than 200 instructional videos, the website receives approximately 50,000 views per day. The girls spend up to 20 hours per week on the site. Both girls also participate in a number of dance styles, including ballet, jazz, tap, acro, hip hop, and lyrical and musical theatre. To view the website, visit www.fitforafeast. com. Meanwhile, a thirst for community involvement runs in the Mogus family. Sisters Julia, 14, and Emma, 13, were nominated in the community service category by Madeleine Buhlau, executive director at the Community Youth in Action Network (CYAN) -- just one of the places the pair has volunteered. As a Grade 9 student at White Oaks High School, Julia is active in the KEY club, associated with the Kiwanis program, and Activism Awareness Association (AAA), as well as the junior debate and cross-country teams and her school's athletic council. During the summer, Julia has volunteered with the Bronte Creek Provincial Park's Nature Centre and on Sept. 17, 2011 she and Emma were part of a shoreline cleanup of Waters Edge Park in Oakville -- collecting three full bags of garbage and recording vital data for the joint conservation program at World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Vancouver Aquarium.
