Woman hopes to recover `priceless' family jewelry stolen By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF It's a long shot, but an Oakville woman is hoping some sentimentally-valuable jewelry, stolen in a recent burglary, will somehow be returned. On Tuesday, March 6, someone broke into the Wakehurst Crescent home of Joseph and Fernanda Curcio. Halton police confirmed the suspect(s) used a tool to smash through a glass window at the rear of the house, at which point they entered and proceeded to ransack the home, taking laptops, cameras, iPods and even some blood pressure medication belonging to one of the homeowners. The suspect(s) also stole numerous pieces of jewelry, which, while not exceedingly valuable monetarily, were deeply valued by the Curcio family. "The jewelry belonged to my late aunt (Silvana D'Onofrio)," said Julie Virgilio, who is temporarily living with her parents in their Wakehurst Crescent home. "The stuff like the laptops and the iPods can be replaced, but we can't replace these precious items. This is stuff that was passed down to both myself and my mom, and even getting one piece back would be fantastic." Virgilio said her aunt struggled with cystic fibrosis before her death on March 1, 2011 and that having her jewelry stolen so close to the first anniversary of her death has been difficult for her mother to bear. More than 30 pieces of D'Onofrio's jewelry were taken during the burglary, Virgilio said. Most pieces were made of Italian gold and included necklaces, rings, bracelets, brooches and earrings. Other jewelry, including watches, rhinestone jewelry and silver jewelry with zirconia in them, were also taken in the theft as was a silver roundfaced watch, which used to belong to Virgilio's grandfather and gold necklaces that were given to Virgilio's children when they were baptized. Virgilio is asking anyone who believes they may have come into possession of this jewelry to turn it in to their nearest police station. She also said she would like to remind residents to take photos of their valuables, particularly their jewelry, to better assist police in the event of a robbery. The precaution was not taken by the Curcio family.
