Taekwondo tournament to honour Comeau By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Friends and family of the late Jesse Comeau, 16, will gather at Iroquois Ridge High School on Saturday, April 28, to honour his memory with the third annual Jesse Comeau Memorial Taekwondo Tournament. Louie Sanchez, chief instructor of Horizon Taekwondo and organizer of the event, said the tournament attracted about 200 participants last year and he is expecting similar attendance in April. The tournament, he said, will see participation from taekwondo schools, not just in Oakville, but across Ontario. "This is for Jesse, to keep his name alive," said Sanchez. "We have people coming from Ottawa, Montreal, from all over the GTA. We have masters and grandmasters coming." Comeau, an instructor at Horizon Taekwondo, was killed on July 11, 2009 when a fight broke out between two groups of youths at a Burlington house party in the summer of 2009. Comeau received a fatal also injured, but have since recovered. Bradley Todorovich, who was 18 at the time, was convicted of manslaughter in June 2011 for Comeau's death and Todorovich was sentenced last fall to serve a six-and-a-half year jail term in prison. "I'd known Jesse since he was five," said Sanchez. "Jesse loved taekwondo, he loved the competitions. This tournament is for him." The event will begin at 10 a.m., with a memorial ceremony for Comeau. Sanchez said during the tournament, Horizon Taekwondo students will be wearing purple shirts as purple was one of Comeau's favourite colours. Photos of Comeau will be displayed prominently at the event. 7 · Thursday, March 29, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com While Sanchez said holding the tournament is important to him, he wishes it wasn't necessary and that the events of July 11, 2009 had never happened. "It's sad...he was just 16 years old," said Sanchez. The public is invited to attend the tournament. Admission costs $5. For more information, call Horizon Taekwondo at 905-844-8384.
