- Description
- Seated is Jane Joyce, sister Maggie is standing in the centre of the group, and sister Mary Ann stands on the right.
Their parents were George and Esther (Brown) Joyce who had emigrated from Tullalech, Ireland about 1856 and settled on a farm southeast of Milton, near Omagh, 9111 Third Line, Lot 6, Conc. 4, Esquesing. They had twelve children, Jane was born in Gollynog, Ireland and George was born in Ballydown, Ireland but the rest were born in Trafalgar Township. - Notes
- Jane never married but when her youngest sister, Rachel, married her cousin, William Joyce, and in 1893 her son, Gordon was born, Jane moved in with Rachel's family and stayed with her sister for the rest of her life. Rachel's husband William wanted to move to the United States but she refused to go with him. Her brother, George, came to work the farm with Gordon and stayed until his death in the 1940's. Gordon had a business of buying, selling and transporting cattle to stock yards while George looked after the farm. George was seriously injured when a bull trampled him and although he remained badly crippled, he continued to work the farm as he had always done. This farm was two concessions north of Dundas, and the farm buildings could be seen east of Trafalgar Road.
A brief, architectural description of the home of George and Esther is found in the document linked here, Halton Hills Heritage Record. - Subject(s)
