Sister act produces third CD, Pretty World By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville's Sandra Mantini and two of her sisters have been performing musically together for more than 15 years and now they've just released their third album together, titled Pretty World. The Mantini Sisters -- comprising of Sandra, Barbara and Ann -- grew up in Niagara Region, and have settled in various parts of southern Ontario. Despite the change in addresses since their childhood days, they never stopped performing together. "We love the sister act," said Sandra, who moved to Oakville 10 years ago with her family. "We get a lot of pleasure out of it and we hope the audience does too." The new CD is a collection of 10 songs, performed in a style blend of easy rock and jazz. It features arrangements of well-known hits from an era they grew up with, featuring such music as Pretty World by Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66, Good Morning Starshine from the musical hit, Hair and the Beatles classic, I'll Follow the Sun. With this month's launch of the CD, the trio has also released two singles. They are Teach Your Children, previously performed by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and Simon & Garfunkel's 59th Street Bridge Song. The trio produces a variety of styles of music, from pop to Broadway. With Pretty World, they aimed to produce music that would reach out to a wider audience. They've just grown so large they no longer need to use the name of the Toronto-based organization. "We've grown to the point that we've incorporated as our own theatre company just for Oakville," said member Amy McKenzie in an e-mail regarding the renaming of the group to Oakville Improv Theatre Company. "Our desire is to continue to bring the best improvisers in the GTA to entertain our local community and to mentor up people who have a desire to be creative and play on stage with us." The group will get its first chance to entertain people under its new banner on Sunday at the Moonshine Cafe. As previously, the group has two shows, one at 7 p.m., followed by an adults-only show at 8:30 p.m. The earlier show features Proxy Server from Toronto versus Oakville's Sixteen Mile Clique. The 8:30 p.m. show features The Wrecking Crew from Comedy on the Danforth with Sam Agro, Gord Oxley and Jane Luk. The café is located at 137 Kerr St. Tickets cost $5 per show. The organization is also taking registrations for its summer youth intensive programs. "For this new CD, we chose songs from our teenage years, that we grew up with and we had them rearranged for our trio. We're pleased with it. It's a more mainstream CD," Sandra said. The three musicians grew up in a musical family with seven children. Sandra, being the oldest of the trio, joined a community musical theatre group in Niagara. It wasn't long before her two younger sisters joined the group. Eventually, the girls began getting professional musical work and each started her own professional music theatre career. After years of touring Canada and the U.S. with theatre troupes, the sisters decided to join forces and make their own show. In 1997, they formed the Mantini Sisters group and the following year released their debut CD, Moments to Remember. The sisters also produced two musical revuestyle shows, one with Broadway and the other with pop music. "Our shows are very versatile. We don't stick to any particular genre. We started off as young girls singing the 40s swing music," said Sandra. "We also grew up listening to and studying different styles of music, anything from classical to jazz, to Broadway." This new CD is heralding the creation of a new live show, with the same title as the CD, featuring a mix of music, storytelling and comedy. The CD officially launched earlier this month. However, the trio is making a stop at Oakville's Chapters bookstore for a CD launch/signing on Sunday, from 1-4 p.m. as part of a Chapters performance tour.
