Flu shot rates in Halton have increased since last year but vaccinations for hospital and long-term care home staff continue to fall below provincial benchmarks. Halton Region distributed 127,307 doses of the influenza vaccine during the 2011-12 flu season, about 5,700 more doses than the 2010-11 season. At Halton Healthcare Services hospitals -- Oakville Trafalgar, Milton District and Georgetown -- 43 per cent of staff were immunized, up from 34 per cent last year, and at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital 25 per cent of staff were given shots. Both organizations fell below the 70 per cent provincial target. Flu shots for staff at Halton's long-term care homes on average reached 60 per cent, up from 56 per cent last year. None of the homes met the Ministry of Health's staff immunization benchmark of 90 per cent. Flu shots fall short Pub assault leads to arrests Two Mississauga women are facing charges after a night at the Sheridan College Pub ended with an alleged assault on two Halton police officers, early Friday morning. Police were called to the on-campus pub at around 1:15 a.m., after it was reported that two intoxicated women were causing a disturbance and refusing to leave the premises. Police said when they arrived two women were allegedly drunk and causing a disturbance. When officers attempted to arrest one of the females, police said she allegedly kicked the two officers repeatedly. The second woman then allegedly assaulted one of the officers as she attempted to interfere with the arrest of her friend, said police. Neither officer was severely injured during the incident. Kate McCrae, 21, and Sandra Hodgins, 21, both from Mississauga, have been charged with causing a disturbance and assaulting a police officer. Both women were held in police custody and then released on a promise to appear at their future court proceedings. 3 · Wednesday, April 25, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Resident immunization at long-term care homes averaged 90 per cent with six of the 18 homes meeting the ministry target of 95 per cent. During a recent health and social service committee meeting, Halton's Medical Officer of Health Dr. Bob Nosal said the population most at risk of catching the flu are in longterm care homes. However, some homes in Halton are seeing very low staff immunization rates. West Oak Village Long Term Care Home in Oakville only saw a 21 per cent staff immunization rate while 92 per cent of residents at the home were immunized. The Ministry of Health pays $5 for every dose of the flu vaccine administered. The cost of providing the shot in the region in 2011 was $7.91 and any costs in excess of $5 are funded through Halton's health department.
