By Brice Roy SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Prom Project is getting ready for the big day -- but a group of 10 Appleby College students is hoping to change that. In its fourth year, the Prom Project, a partnership with the school and Kerr Street Ministries (KSM), seeks to collect gentlyused dresses, shirts, bags, shoes and other prom wear and distribute it to underprivileged students. "It's been going very well," said Jackie Hanson, a Grade 12 student involved in the project. "For the last few weeks, we have been canvassing stores in the region. We're getting a lot of donations from families at our school and hoping we can get more from the greater community." The project is entirely organized by Appleby College students with minimal assistance from teachers. Each student has been given a specific task ranging from collecting donations to decorating for their event. "It's completely student-driven. I'm just there to supervise," said Kaela Newey, an Appleby College teacher and event supervisor. "They all have their own jobs. We have a student working public relations. They have gotten into pairs and each have their own store they are liaising with. We also have students who are working with Kerr Street Ministries to set up the event." One event that stands out on the horizon is prom, where students dress to the hilt and celebrate all they've accomplished. Unfortunately, due to financial hardship, some students are unable to dress their best on the biggest day of their year The My Bronte residents' group will hold a protest/ family picnic on the grounds of Fire Station No. 1 (2535 Rebecca St.) Sunday, to again draw attention to the property's cell tower. Many residents living near the cell tower, at Bronte Road and Rebecca Street, have voiced concerns about Bell Canada's co-location on the tower, which was previously only used by the local emergency services. The My Bronte residents' group fears the possible health impacts increased use of the cell tower will have on the surrounding community and is calling on residents to attend the picnic Sunday at noon to show opposition. "Bell Canada and the Bronte picnic protest Town of Oakville chose to locate these antennas here, they can choose to relocate them to locations with appropriate setbacks protecting the firefighters, the children in the daycare, the churches, school and the residences that are well under the Town of Oakville's 200-metre setback protocol," said Wendy Perkins of My Bronte. Those attending are asked to bring their family, their picnic and a brightly-coloured blanket. My Bronte representatives will also speak about plans for the May 14 Town council meeting, at which council is expected to discuss cell tower setback preferences. Once all the items are donated and collected, needy students will be able to attend a gala on Saturday, May 12 at KSM, to be assisted in preparing for prom. "I think people should donate because they have these dresses just sitting in a closet. It's such a great cause. The dresses go to underprivileged people. It just feels good to help others when you are able to," said Hanson. To make a donation or RSVP to attend the gala event, contact knewey@appleby. on.ca. RSVPs are confidential.
