Titan is a Jack-of-all-trades in helping out humans Continued from page 1 3 · Wednesday, May 9, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com extremely bad. I believe we had 70 millimetres of rain that night. The winds were gusting up to 90 km/h. It was an incredibly poor weather night, which makes it more difficult for us to track because when the human odour hits the ground, the rain washes it away and the wind blows it away," McLorn said. "Because the conditions were so poor, it was even more remarkable that Titan was actually able to track." Titan found the woman deep in the woods, near the creek. Police officers then transported the woman to a nearby ambulance and she was taken to hospital where she was treated for hypothermia and the drug overdose. This is just one of the many types of duties Titan is called upon to perform. The dog can find objects with human odour on them, such as evidence left behind by a culprit at a crime scene. He can track missing people or fleeing criminals. He can search and clear large buildings to see if anyone is inside, as well as complete the same task outdoors. He's also a drug-detector dog. "He's like a Jack-of-all-trades. He's a pretty amazing dog," McLorn said. Titan has been McLorn's partner since March 2010 and lives in her home where she also has a pet cat and dog. "I do all of the care for him. He's with me 24 hours a day, seven days a week," the police constable said. "He doesn't do a lot of things a normal pet would do, but he does live at the house." McLorn said police dogs generally stay in service until about age eight, depending on their health. However, Titan's retirement will be coming early as he's scheduled to end his service this summer. "These dogs are almost like professional athletes. They train hard every day. They play hard. Sometimes they get injured or they develop issues. Titan has developed arthritis," she said. This is also a reason why Titan lives inside the house and not outdoors, which is more common for police dogs. When Titan does retire, his ownership will be turned over to McLorn and he will become her pet, while the police officer will be partnered with a new canine. But when his retirement comes, McLorn said Titan will still remain active. "For these dogs, their whole lives revolve around working and training so when he does retire, I'll still practise with him," she said. "I'll get him to do training, even though he's retired. It's so much fun for him. He just absolutely loves to work. There's no doubt that when he retires, I will continue to let him train." The Hall of Fame ceremony took place at PawsWay Pet Education Centre in Toronto, where three other dogs were also inducted. Since 1968, the Purina Animal Hall of Fame has recognized 155 pets and service animals -- 128 dogs, 26 cats and one horse -- for their life-saving heroics.
