Aquinas defeated the Bearcats 2-1 in overtime to win the Halton senior girls' A/AA soccer championship. NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @HALTON_PHOTOG Raiders give Acton the boot By Lucas Casaletto SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Marisa Parsons' overtime goal lifted the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders to a 2-1 win over the Acton Bearcats in the Halton senior girls' soccer A/AA final Wednesday at North Park. With seven minutes remaining in the second overtime session, the Raiders broke into Acton territory on a three-on-two before Parsions fired home the game winner. "I was in the right place at the right time, and I put it in," Parsons said afterwards, with a smile on her face. Her father, Tim, suggested there was a bit more to it than that. "I think it went off her left foot. That's pretty impressive," he said. Wednesday's matchup in the finals was an unexpected one, considering that both Aquinas (3-3-1) and Acton (3-4) seemed average during the regular season. But the Raiders upset the second-seeded Burlington Central Trojans 2-1 in the semis, while Acton surprised the top-ranked Lester B. Pearson Patriots. Raiders head coach Justin Yantho said he is pleased with his team's effort as it prepares for next week's Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) double-A tournament in St. Thomas. Both Acton, a single-A team, and Aquinas were already guaranteed OFSAA trips before the Halton final was played. "We ended the game on a high note and we were fortunate to be able to rotate our substitutions through the game pretty well," Yantho said. "It was a good game, the girls played well and so did Acton. It was definitely a good game to have before going into OFSAA." The Raiders do still have things to work on, though, Yantho said. "We need to have a little bit better ball control early on, but at the end we were able to smarten up even though it did take the whole game to get there," said the coach. Laura Medlock had Aquinas' goal during regulation time, scoring on a penalty kick four minutes into the game. Acton quickly tied the game, however, on a marker by Maddie Christmann.
