"He has a very good shot, but he doesn't use it enough throughout the season," Zietsma said. "He often looks to pass first, which is great because he has an excellent cross, but we really encouraged him to shoot as well." Agnew picked a perfect time to heed his coach's advice. With the Cavaliers tied 1-1 against Glengarry District and 15 minutes left to go in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) single-A championship game Saturday in Windsor, Agnew threw the ball in to teammate Anthony Sossa deep in Glengarry territory. Sossa tapped the ball back to Agnew, a few feet from the right sideline, hardly a prime scoring area. But Agnew thought he'd try a shot anyway. "I had a couple corners before that, and the goalie wasn't very strong when he was catching it. I thought I'd try it again," Agnew said. He stopped the ball with his right foot, then quickly lofted it towards the goal with his left. The ball soared 25 feet into the air and tailed towards the net, over the outstretched arms of the Glengarry keeper and just inside the far post. Agnew's remarkable strike was the deciding goal as the Cavaliers defeated Glengarry 2-1 to win OFSAA gold, the school's second provincial boys' soccer championship in five years. "It was great. I had no words. Once I shot it, I just couldn't believe it," Agnew said. Sossa, who scored six of the Cavaliers' 12 goals during the tournament, could. "I wasn't surprised. I knew he could do it," Sossa said. "You know how you get that feeling before someone kicks it? I had that feeling before Dylan kicked the ball." Ramez Nossier also scored in the final for King's, which won six of its seven games at OFSAA to erase the memories of a disappointing showing at last year's tournament. Sossa said there was a tangible difference between this year's OFSAA championship team and the squad that failed to advance past group play at the 2011 provincials. "It was the dedication and perseverance we had throughout the season. Everyone showed up at practice every week. There wasn't one player missing. Last year, there really wasn't that drive," Sossa said. "Two practices before OFSAA, we had to do a 24-minute run in the gym, and I saw all the boys keep on running. I'd never seen that from them before." Sossa's dedication and perseverance has never been in question, however. The Grade 11 student, a native of Australia, scored all the Cavaliers' goals in their first two playoff games -- a 2-0 win over Kenora St. Thomas Aquinas in the quarter-finals and a 1-0 victory over Waterford District in the semis. "You can just see in his goals the incred- ible drive he has to score. The headers he had, too, he just outheads guys taller than him through sheer desire and drive," Zietsma said. But Sossa was quick to acknowledge he had plenty of help. "It wasn't all me. I got the support from the midfielders especially, and our back line created a lot of offence," he said. "It was just amazing, everything was going right for us. I couldn't ask for more. All I had to do was put it in the net." Michael Panza (two), Kyle Klassen and Kareem Nossier scored the Cavaliers' other goals in the tournament. Defensively, Caleb Sawh, Jonathan Yang, Spencer Eisses and Klassen were particularly integral in helping Cavaliers captain Sebastian Sciarra allow just three goals in the tournament. "He was the best keeper at the tournament," Zietsma said of Sciarra. "He's been the backbone of our team, providing great leadership."
