Fencer earns spot on Pan-Am team Canadian Fencing Academy (CFA) member Kirsten Ball has been selected to represent Canada at this month's Pan-American championships in Cancun. Ball will be part of the Canadian women's epee team at the PanAms, which will run from June 14-20. She is coming off a bronzemedal showing at the national championships recently in Saskatoon, the best performance by a member of the Oakville club. Andrea Csiba finished fifth in women's epee at nationals, while Mark Jones placed 25th in men's epee. Ball also claimed bronze at last month's eastern Canadian championships, where teammate Kyle Foster struck gold in veteran men's epee. Herren, the subject of the ESPN documentary `Unguarded' has been drug-free since 2008 and established The Herren Project to assist young people recovering from drug addiction. Herren delivers cautionary tale to hushed students The gymnasium at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School was packed but only one voice could be heard. Students sat in silence as former NBA and NCAA player Chris Herren spoke to students Monday, telling them about his battles with drug addiction. "You could hear a pin drop during the presentation," said Holy Trinity teacher Peter Bonfiglio, who arranged Herren's appearance. Herren warned students about alcohol and marijuana being gateway drugs. Herren started drinking in high school, eventually turning to Percocet. A high school acquaintance introduced him to oxycontin -- which started at 40 milligrams a day, and continued to 1600mg a day. Oxycontin and cocaine led to heroin, and the demise of his career. Drafted by the Denver Nuggets out of Fresno State, Herren played two seasons in the NBA. One with Denver, and one with the Boston Celtics. But his brief stops in the NBA were just the beginning of a career sabotaged by drug use. Over the next six years, he played in Italy, Turkey, China, Germany, Iran and Poland. Herren was charged with possession of heroin and driving under the influence in 2004. He entered rehab and has been drugfree since 2008. Bonfiglio was interested in having Herren speak to the students after seeing the ESPN 30-for-30 documentary `Unguarded'. Inspired by the basketball player's message, Bonfiglio contacted Herren's agent three months ago and was thrilled he was able to come to the school. His presentation brought some students to tears and many hugged him when he finished speaking. "He never came off as someone who was doing this for the money," Bonfiglio said. "He did this so he could reach at least one student and stop them from descending into a life of drug abuse."
