Ham radio buffs to have Field Day this weekend Ham radio enthusiasts from across North America will be showing off their disaster and emergency communications capabilities tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday and radio operators from Halton Region will be part of the action. Operating this year from Bronte Creek Provincial Park, ham operators from the Oakville Amateur Radio Club will set up and operate a radio station capable of communicating with other "hams" worldwide. The public is invited to come out and visit us in the park at the Tyrell A campground from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Over the past few years, the news has been full of reports of ham radio operators providing critical communications in emergencies including the Japan earthquake and tsunami, Haiti Earthquake, Midwest floods, northern forest fires, tornadoes, and other events worldwide. During Hurricane Katrina, Amateur Radio -- known as "ham radio" -- was often the only way people could communicate, and hundreds of volunteer hams used their communications skills and radio equipment to help save lives and property. In Haiti, Ham Radio provided emergency communications following the devastating earthquake which destroyed that countries telecommunications infrastructure. Ham radio provided a critical communications link between field medical staff in the disaster zone, military "hospital" ships offshore, and medical and logistical resources on the mainland in Florida. The annual Field Day event helps local hams and their counterparts across the continent practise their emergency communications skills using voice, digital modes, and even Morse Code, over a 24-hour period which tests equipment and operator endurance. Last year, local hams operated from their partner organization, the Milton Red Cross and 15 · Friday, June 22, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com from the Halton Regional building. This year, the Oakville Amateur Radio Club members have chosen to operate from a more wilderness-type location where there are no commercial facilities such as electricity. There are an estimated 50,000 licensed hams in Canada (650,000 in the U.S. and more than 2.5 million worldwide). Last year, an estimated 60,000 hams across North America participated in Field Day activities throughout Canada and the USA. The Oakville Amateur Radio Club has more than 20 members participating in this year's event. Sore Feet, Sports Injury, Painful Ingrown Toenails? Plantar Warts? We can help!
