Celebrating independence By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF You don't have to travel to Jamaica to get some jerk chicken, rice and sweet-fried plantain. You can get it right here in town and a local organization plans to serve up lots of it on Saturday, July 21. The local group Pride of Jamaica invites everyone to come out and enjoy the food, music and dancing as it celebrates the Caribbean's 50th anniversary of independence from British rule with an event called Taste of Jamaica. The event is put on in association with Irie Cuisine Restaurant of Oakville. "We're hoping people will come out, celebrate with us, learn a little bit about the history of Jamaica and the culture and its people and obviously enjoy the good food and the music," said group spokesperson Patricia Rumble. The Oakville event is modeled after a similar one taking place in Toronto later this summer, but organizers say it's easier to get to for those who live west of the city and has a much cheaper price of admission. The event raises money for RISE (Reaching Individuals through Skills and Education) Life Management Services in Jamaica. RISE has programs for at-risk, inner-city youths and parents and community members. The event will celebrate Jamaican culture and its achievements in 50 years of See Jamaica page 21 5 · Friday, July 13, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com ERIC RIEHL / OAKVILLE BEAVER / @halton_photog with pride: Pride of Jamaica held a kick-off breakfast at Irie Cuisine for its upcoming Taste of Jamaica dinner and dance on Saturday, July 21 at the 707 Galaxy Banquet Hall.
