The Hamilton-Halton branch of the Ontario Registered Music Teachers Association (ORMTA) is hosting a four-day convention at the Holiday Inn in Burlington (3063 South Service Rd.) from July 22-25. The local branch spans from Stoney Creek to Oakville and has not hosted a provincial convention for music teachers in more than 30 years. Oakville vocalist Susan Ambrose will be presenting a vocal workshop, while Linda Fletcher, a prominent local vocal teacher, will be organizing a recital featuring voice students from Oakville. Fletcher was also awarded the title of Special Teacher for this year and will be honoured at a luncheon on Tuesday (July 24). The Spurrell Studio Choir, under Oakville conductor Natalie Spurrell, will also be performing during the convention, while local collaborative pianist, Dr. Christoper Foley will be one the judges at the student competitions, which are open to the public on the Sunday and Monday (July 23) evenings. The convention will also feature master classes, as well as several speakers discussing topics such as, early music education and the brain, and musical theatre. There will also be numerous exhibits from music publishers and representatives from the industry, as well as a fashion show f r o m Susan Ambrose Westfield Heritage Village. The show will feature clothing from the 1770s and 1830s, and prizes. Members of the public are welcome Linda Fletcher to attend the sessions during the convention. ON DISPLAY: Three generations of artists in the Davidson family recently had their works of art on display at the Seasons Restaurant in downtown Oakville. Blakelock High School art students will get a chance to sell their works of art for a good cause Friday during Oakville's Midnight Madness event. Juan Posada, Jamie Oswald, Matthew Stewart, Artem Vartanov, Honey Kim and Madison Leeson will be part of the high school group selling their artworks during the July 20 event. A majority of the proceeds raised will be donated to Safetynet Children Youth Services. The artists will also get to keep up to 25 per cent of the proceeds from their art sales. The United Artists' Initiative 2012 will feature art works by local student artists using a variety of mediums. Midnight Madness takes place in downtown Oakville, beginning at 6 p.m. and goes until midnight.
