Canada went 6-0 at the Federation Internationale de Roller Sports (FIRS) competition, clinching the gold with a 4-2 victory over the United States in the final. The gold was Canada's first in six years at the event, with the team earning four silvers and a bronze at the previous five competitions. Last year, Canada lost the final to the U.S. on a goal with less than a second left in regulation time. Grigg had a hat trick in Canada's second game, a 12-1 win over Argentina. Grigg, headed into her sophomore season with the Rochester Institute of Technology women's hockey team, also contributed an assist in a 13-0 quarter-final win over Colombia. "As expected, Lindsay played a key role on the defensive end, yet was still able to contribute offensively," said Canadian head coach Donna Forbes. "Her ability to control the puck and read the play makes her an impact player and a threat to any team." Forbes was also pleased with the play of the 14-year-old Collier, who was the youngest-ever player to represent Canada at the tournament. "As a young rookie, Nicole did a great job of representing her country. She was very responsive to feedback and did whatever was asked of her," Forbes said. "As a coach, you love players like that. Hopefully the world championships will give her experience and confidence for the future." Memorable trip west for novice 1 Hawks The Oakville novice 1 Hawks recently returned from British Columbia with eight wins in as many games, gold medals from the prestigious Jack Crosby Tournament and a greater appreciation for one of their country's all-time heroes. The boys' lacrosse team dominated its competition while out in Burnaby, winning those eight games by a combined score of 99-33. That included a 15-8 victory over the reigning British Columbia champion Coquitlam Gold in the final of the Jack Crosby competition, finishing off a 6-0 showing at the tournament. Oakville's other wins at the Jack Crosby came over Coquitlam Silver (15-4), New Westminster Salmonbellies (9-1), Coquitlam Gold (8-5), Port Coquitlam Saints (9-5) and Burnaby Lakers (15-5). Ryan Brooks was named Oakville's MVP in both games against Coquitlam Gold. Owen Sage was the MVP in the victory over Coquitlam Silver, Dante Parisotto received the honour against New Wesminster, Cameron Tolnai earned the nomination against Port Coquitlam and Jake Dawick was selected as MVP versus Burnaby. Hawks co-coach Rob MacDougall also highlighted goaltender Davis Tolnai and clutch performer Chris Dong's contributions to Oakville's success. Prior to the Jack Crosby tournament, the Hawks defeated the Delta Islanders 14-4 and New Westminster 14-1 in exhibition action. Oakville players also got a history lesson during their trip, visiting the Port Coquitlam grave of Terry Fox. MacDougall was impressed with how much the Hawks already knew about the former humanitarian and cancer research activist. "My team has its own set of 10 commandments that we adhere to. One player said that Terry actually embodied seven of our commandments: commitment, unselfishness, discipline, respect, preparation, accountability and outwill/outwit," MacDougall said. "I questioned the last commandment, and the player responded that Terry couldn't outwit the cancer but he certainly outwilled it. Pretty amazing words, coming from a kid." Other members of the Hawks team are Luke Dawick, Jake McKinstray, Ethan Stainton, Ethen Harkins, Tyler Ford, Landon Masse, Matthew Vilas, Chase Strychulak, Brian Jackman, Zach Terry, Max Boulanger and Barnie Tolnai. Alex Harkins and Bryan Brooks also coach the team. -- See page 33 for a photo of the team Canada fifth at U17 basketball worlds Anthony Pate, Jake Babic and the Canadian cadet men's basketball team finished fifth at the recent FIBA U17 world championships in Lithuania. Canada defeated Argentina 84-79 in its final game of the tournament to finish the competition with a 5-3 record. Canada's other wins came against China, Korea, Lithuania and Argentina, with its losses coming at the hands of Croatia, Spain and the United States. Pate, a former Holy Trinity student now attending Long Island Lutheran in New York, averaged 13 minutes per game in the tournament and 3.4 points per game. He had eight points against Croatia. Babic, a student at Loyola, averaged 7.4 minutes and 1.9 points per game while also pulling down 1.5 rebounds per contest.
