Officer awarded for dedication By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A Halton Regional Police Service constable has been recognized for his dedication to youth mentorship and education with the Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Medal. Constable Drew Scott, a 25-year member of Halton police, joined the Educational Services Unit in January 2007 where he played an integral leadership role in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program. The highly acclaimed international course teaches Grade 6 students about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and how to make positive choices. Each year, more than 6,000 youths across the region receive the curriculum from a specially trained team of six Halton police officers, including Scott. "I gladly accept this honour on behalf of our unit," said Scott. "More than any one person, this medal recognizes the work being done every day by all of our officers to connect and engage with youths. Man facing robbery charge A 23-year-old Oakville man is facing charges in connection with the alleged robbery of the Esso station at 345 Speers Rd. early Tuesday. Halton police said the incident occurred shortly after midnight when a man was reported to have entered the gas station, approached an employee at the cash register and indicated he had a concealed firearm. Police reported the man demanded, and was given, a quantity of cash and then fled. No one was harmed during the robbery and at no time was a firearm actually seen. Halton police arrived on the scene a few moments later and began an investigation, which resulted in a suspect being arrested later the same day. Derek Johne, 23, of Oakville faces a charge of robbery and two counts of breaching probation.
