www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, August 23, 2012 · 4 Public invited to celebrate local Olympians Sept. 15 Mayor Rob Burton and members of council are calling on residents to give Oakville's Olympians a standing ovation during a public reception slated for Saturday, Sept. 15, in Centennial Square. Olympians Adam van Koeverden, Diana Matheson, Douglas Csima, Kyle Jones, Tera Van Beilen and Mark Oldershaw have been invited to the event, which starts at 2 p.m. To kick-start the celebrations, a motorcade will transport the Olympians along Lakeshore Road downtown to Centennial Square for an official reception and autograph session. "Oakville's athletes really stood out in London," said Burton. "They trained for years and their hard work paid off. I'm hoping everyone will join me in publicly recognizing their accomplishments by coming out to give them a proper hometown welcome." Oakville's athletes scored many successes during the London Olympics. Van Koeverden received a silver medal in the men's kayak single 1,000m, while Csima collected a silver medal in the men's eight rowing competition. Matheson scored the winning goal during the bronze medal women's soccer game. Oldershaw, who trains out of Oakville, captured a bronze medal in the men's canoe singles 1,000m. Jones' performance made him the highest finishing Canadian triathlete in the London Olympics and Van Beilen's near berth in the finals of the 100metre breaststroke was also something to celebrate. Residents interested in volunteering at the celebration can contact Elizabeth Tamas at etamas@oakville.ca. More details will be available soon at www. oakville.ca. Centennial Square is located at the corner of Lakeshore Road and Navy Street, in front of the Oakville Public Library and Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts.
