Skate Oakville will begin its 75th anniversary celebrations this weekend with a barbecue on Saturday. The club was formed in 1937 as the Oakville Figure Skating Club with just 40 skaters. Its alumni include Otto and Maria Jelinek, who won the pairs title at the 1962 world championships. Today, the club has grown to be the largest in Canada with 2,500 skaters. The barbecue will be the first of many events to mark the anniversary. Also planned throughout the year are a holiday family skate, memorabilia displays and contests. It will all lead up to the Skate Oakville 75th anniversary gala ice show in April. Saturday's barbecue is open to the public and will be held at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Many alumni will be on hand to help start the 75th anniversary celebrations.
