Memorial efforts inspired LAST CHANCE FOR creation of school PRE-CONSTRUCTION PRICES! Continued from page 16 19 · Friday, September 28, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com commemorating the Canadian lives that were lost during the Second World War. It took eight years of perseverance, fundraising, and lobbying major authorities, but his dream had finally come to fruition; he had finally raised $10 million, the amount needed to construct the Juno Beach Centre and to get it up and running. Webb was rewarded the Meritorious Service Cross and the French Legion of Honour for his tremendous efforts. Webb's memorial efforts have inspired Garth Webb Secondary School to follow his initiative and continue his legacy of honouring those who have sacrificed their lives in the Second World War by participating in the Juno Beach Memorial Brick Project. The project is a Halton-wide program that honours the 246 soldiers from the region who fought in the Second World War by purchasing a memorial brick for each of them -- the engraved brick can be found on one of the columns at the Juno Beach Centre, which includes the soldier's name, rank, decorations, unit, dates of service, and their contribution to the war. Each brick costs $250 and will be purchased through students' fundraising efforts throughout the year. Garth Webb Secondary School students can also gain a deeper understanding of the Second World War through the Grade 10 Ottawa trip during the Remembrance Day weekend, and the plethora of informative posters placed throughout the school. These efforts will give students the opportunity to realize that their privileged circumstances are not without cost, thus fulfilling Webb's legacy for younger generations. Webb was a man who believed in honouring those who contributed to the greater good of humanity. His acts of perseverance, respect, and determination are revered in Garth Webb Secondary School and serve as a paradigm for student character.
