Forum to debunk myths surrounding bullying Bullying is a difficult challenge for children, and it can also make parents feel helpless, but there is help. The Bullying Prevention Committee of the Our Kids Network (OKN) wants to give parents the skills they need to help their children. The organization is hosting its forum called Debunking Myths About Bullying on Thursday, Nov. 22 at Ernest C. Drury School for the Deaf in Milton. The forum runs from 7-8:30 p.m. The event will feature a talk by the University of Ottawa's Dr. Tracy Vaillancourt, a recognized leader in the area of children's mental health and violence prevention. She focuses on bullying, victimization and aggression. "Parents need resources to help them understand, prevent, and address bullying," said Elena DiBattista, OKN director, in a news release. "The partners on our Bullying Prevention Committee established this forum to give parents information and real-life tools and strategies to help their children, whether they are being bullied, are engaging in bullying, or are bystanders to bullying." According to the 2009/10 Halton Youth Survey, 39 per cent of Grade 7 students and 28 per cent of Grade 10 students have been bullied. "It's no secret that bullying leaves lasting effects," DiBattista said. "This is a complex issue and we will continue to encourage families and organizations involved with children and youths to work together as a community to prevent bullying in all its forms."
