Besides experiencing the Fatal Vision goggles, students also got the opportunity to take a roadside breath test and take a quiz about the law and impaired driving. Students who participated in these exercises were rewarded for their trouble with coupons for some free McDonald's food. This incentive in addition to the entertaining nature of the activities resulted in a large crowd of students volunteering to take RIDE 101 during their lunch period. Lexi Steele, 14, and several other students volunteered to help police run the event. Her job was to stand near her goggle wearing friends and when necessary step in to prevent them from hurting themselves. "I need volunteer hours, but I also thought that because impaired driving is a problem it would be good to get involved," she said. Looking at the staggering students, Steele said it was scary to think that some people actually do get behind the wheel of a car like that. Halton Police Public Affairs Officer Sgt. Dave Cross said RIDE 101 gets the point across about the dangers of impaired driving in a way something like a lecture just never could. "This is totally interactive for them. As you "I need volunteer hours, but I also though that because impaired driving is a problem it would be good to get involved." Lexi Steele, 14, T.A. Blakelock student can hear as you are walking around they are having lots of fun, there is a lot of laughing and giggling going on, but the underlying aspect is that they are learning about impaired driving," said Cross. "That is really important at this stage of their lives." Cross said the message seems to be getting through as Halton police do not see a lot of high school aged youths drinking and driving. The demographic Halton police are seeing a lot of when it comes to impaired driving, said Cross, is men in the 35-50 age range. In addition to the morning activities, members of Blakelock's student council joined police during the evening to assist officers in speaking with drivers at a RIDE spot check. 1011 Upper Middle Rd.
