International hockey coverage helped site during lockout Continued from page 24 Minor bantam Whalers strike gold in Detroit The Oakville Whalers minor bantam MD team (pictured, left) won the A/Select Division championship at the Motown Cup hockey tournament recently in Detroit. The Whalers went undefeated in five games at the tournament, clinching the gold with a 2-1 win over the East Enders in the final. Previously in the tournament, Oakville edged the Belleville Jr. Bulls in a nailbiting semifinal that concluded with a lengthy shootout. Thomas Dell scored the shootout winner and Sanjay Sareen was sensational in goal, en route to winning the tournament MVP award. Other members of the Whalers are Mathieu Marek, Daniel Monte, Jordan Ng, Ben Pace, Jay Walden, Kyle Medd, Jack Melber, Mathew DiSalvo, Pearce Feijo, Matthew Cestra, Shayan Shirazi, Ryan Wood, Braeden Webber and Will Eadie. Tony Marek, Dale Walden, Manny Feijo, Len Pace, Reese Feijo and John Webber coach the team. 25 · Thursday, January 17, 2013 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com in Europe. "We were getting a huge, huge number of people from outside of Canada. During the lockout, we probably had more European visitors than anything," said Ellis, who relied heavily on social media to stay on top of news about leagues overseas but has also developed several contacts in Europe. "We would find a European report of a signing, which somebody in Canada or the U.S. hadn't reported already, and we would be one of the first English outlets to report the story. There were some instances where we were credited with breaking the story." TheHockeyHouse also provided coverage of North American professional leagues, like the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League, as well as the Spengler Cup and the IIHF World Junior Championship during the NHL's hiatus. "The world juniors was our best time. In a two-week period, we had 33,000 new visitors," Ellis said. "The views have stayed consistent basically every single day after that." With the NHL scheduled to return to action this weekend, the students say it will only help TheHockeyHouse. Their NHL-focused writers have already resumed posting content on a regular basis, and a weekly podcast featuring Ellis and Brushett will soon return as well. "We'll have more stories coming out on game previews, reviews, trades. It's only going to get better," Scarrow said. "But our focus is still more on European hockey and overseas, because there's not a lot of English people who cover it and there are so many NHL sites." Lehner said TheHockeyHouse has been able to cover its expenses through the sale of advertising, but the site is certainly not financially lucrative. The attention the students' site has received across the world is enough motivation to continue committing their time, at least for now. "It's a lot of work," Lehner said. "To put out all this effort and not get anything, it wouldn't seem worth it. "It's been much, much better than we ever could have anticipated." -- Jon Kuiperij can be followed on Twitter @Beaversports Intermediate Hornets back to even on season The Oakville intermediate AA Hornets have finally fought their way back to the .500 mark. Oakville won a pair of home games last weekend, 6-1 over the Brampton Thunder and 2-1 over the Kingston Ice Wolves, to even its Provincial Women's Hockey League record at 8-8-7. The Hornets have lost just three times in regulation time since opening the season with a six-game winless streak. Jennifer MacAskill had four points (one goal, three assists) and Hayley Scamurra added three more (two goals, one assist) in Friday's win over Brampton at Joshua's Creek Arenas. Kristin Gilmour, Michelle Quick and Jessica Prevette also tallied for the Hornets in support of victorious netminder Kierra Lambertucci. The Hornets outshot Brampton 25-17 on the night. Saturday, Scamurra scored both Oakville goals against the Ice Wolves. Camille Leonard carried a shutout into the third period, finishing the contest with 20 saves. Oakville fired 36 shots at Kingston goalie Jensen Murphy. The Hornets look to move above the .500 mark for the first time this season when they host the league-leading Mississauga Chiefs tonight (Thursday, 8 p.m.) at Joshua's Creek. Oakville will then travel to Kingston Saturday for a rematch with the Ice Wolves.
