www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, February 1, 2013 · 8 Kin Club gives $4,500 to Oakville Salvation Army The local Kinsmen Club recently presented The Salvation Army of Oakville a cheque for $4,500, raised during the 2012 Santa Claus Parade. "The Oakville community's support for the Kinsmen Club of Oakville's food drive during the parade was the best ever," stated a press release. More than 6,000 pounds (2,721 kilograms) of food was collected during the annual parade, along with the $4,500 in cash donations. More than 20 volunteers, including Kinsmen and their family and friends, as well as cheerleaders from the Toronto Rock lacrosse team, collected food and money all along the parade route. Kinsmen Life Member and Town Councillor Ralph Robinson presented the cheque to Major Martyn Goodger of The Salvation Army during the Kinsmen general meeting Jan. 9. "A very special thanks to Kinsmen's business partners, including Whole Foods for providing carts and baskets as well as Chris Cudmore at Oakville Hydro for providing two trucks and drivers to collect the food donations," stated the release. "This year saw the debut of a special Oakville Transit bus promoting The Salvation Army food drive. Thanks to Barry Cole and the Oakville Transit team for their participation. Special thanks to Peter Day, president of Endo Networks, Julia Wood and the Endo staff who worked with Pam Damoff, parade chair, to bring this bus to the community. Thanks as well to Sheridan College, Joe Morse and especially Megan Stiver whose design was chosen for the bus." The cheque presentation comes on the heels of The Salvation Army recently announcing its annual Kettle Campaign not meeting its 2012 targets locally and nationally. The Salvation Army fell short of its $135,000 goal in Oakville by more than $25,000, according to the organization's interim pastor -- nationally, the Kettle Campaign collect $20.6 million; its goal was $21 million. "It's the first time that I know that we haven't made it and I'm not sure what the reasons are at this time," Goodger told the Beaver earlier this month. The organization collected $109,665 during the holiday Kettle Campaign, which ran for several weeks, starting on Nov. 17, 2012 until Christmas Eve (Dec. 24). The campaign is The Salvation Army's largest cash drive and raises funds to help those in need at Christmas, such as providing food vouchers to buy a holiday meal and toys for local children, as well as helps fund community programs beyond the holidays. SUBMITTED PHOTO Flynn congratulates Wynne Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn congratulated Ontario Premier-designate Kathleen Wynne, Monday, on her historic victory in becoming the first female premier of Ontario. Wynne, who represents the Don Valley West riding, was appointed premier-designate on Saturday during an Ontario Liberal Leadership convention in Toronto. "Kathleen's win marks a momentous occasion for our province when it comes to breaking barriers," said Flynn. "Ontario has made news around the world for this groundbreaking step, which has given girls in Oakville as well as moms and dads evidence that no job is out of reach of any woman in this province." Flynn said Wynne has continually demonstrated leadership, energy and an ability to bring opposing sides to the table to find solutions to challenges. "I look forward to working closely with Kathleen on a number of important issues to Oakville and making Ontario a more compassionate and fair place to live, work and raise a family," said Flynn.
