He is trained to do that." Just being in the presence of a police dog can sometimes be an intimidating experience. Csanyi said even when hiding from a dog during training, hearing the four-footed sleuth getting closer still evokes fear. When not engaged in police work, Bishop spends his time in a police vehicle, which has been outfitted to serve as a mobile kennel. While his services are not needed on every call, Bishop accompanies Vander Heyden throughout his shift. When the day's work is over, Bishop returns to Vander Heyden's home where a special outdoor kennel has been set up, complete with an insulated doghouse. Vander Heyden said Bishop has to live out- side so he is used to the weather conditions and can work when needed. Csanyi said being a member of the canine unit requires great commitment as the handler must care for the dog and keep its needs met at all times. Vander Heyden said Bishop deserves nothing less because at the end of the day he is his partner. "In our training, I was quite impressed because we would practise someone assaulting me and I would hit an emergency button that opens his (the vehicle's) kennel door and he hops out and chases after the guy who just assaulted me," said Vander Heyden. "That's kind of cool because there's someone who will always back you up and will always be there." · · · · · Meet a professor and receive academic advice.
