With Oakville being ranked as one of the top five richest cities in Canada (and with an average family income of $101,675) it is assumed that the majority of students in Oakville are expected to attend university. OYAP allows students to develop handson experience in their trade or occupation of choice while remaining enrolled in high school. Students specialize in one of a dozen trades offered through Halton District high schools -- chef, baker, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, auto mechanic, millwright, welding -- and are instructed in their trade while still working toward an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. A co-operative work term with a potential employer is required to complete the program, helping to give prospective students experience. Barb Finan has worked with OYAP for six years as Halton's OYAP Pathways Facilitator. "It's a great way of learning because you've got a job. The co-op portion helps you to get that employer... to get your foot in the door," she said. "You have to be smart in order to complete an apprenticeship." Apprenticeships are completed after high school, and involve a combination of extensive on-the-job experience and courses taken at local colleges. The government subsidizes 80 per cent of any tuition required for in-class instruction, Finan says. In most cases, on-the-job training is paid. Students enrolling in the program take one or more courses in their school focusing on the industry of their choice. For example, anyone taking the Transportation OYAP program at White Oaks would be required to take four transportation classes, as well as a co-op in the automotive-repair industry. Instructors in OYAP programs are former professionals in the trades. Sophia Paan, the Hairstyling OYAP teacher at Abbey Park, worked in her industry for eight years before becoming a teacher. All teachers within technological education have to have a minimum of five years in trade. Instructors also tend to bring in guest speakers working within the industry, as well as specialists. This depth of field and exposure to multiple career paths is an advantage for students. "They're getting the training they would normally get in a private trade school or college level," said Paan. OYAP students also tend to be highly motivated. According to Mitch Deddes, a Grade 12 student working on an OYAP and Pathways promotional video, "They (OYAP students) need less motivation from the teachers to complete tasks. They show creativity through what they do, not through academics." The end result is a student who is driven, highly skilled, and has real-world work experience in a trade that is in-demand- all before completing high school. Just in time, too.
