Ice show to cap Skate Oakville 75th anniversary celebrations Skate Oakville will cap off its 75th anniversary season with three spectacular ice shows next month. Two ice shows will be held Saturday, April 6 (1 p.m. and 7 p.m.) and another will be held Sunday, April 7 (2 p.m.). The events will take place at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. "Diamonds: A Jubilee Celebration on Ice" will showcase more than 200 skaters, ranging in levels from entry Canskate to the top competitive members. All of the Oakville Edge synchronized skating teams will also be showcased as the club takes spectators on a journey through the decades, celebrating 75 years. Among the guest skaters at the event will be Canadian senior dance silver medallists Piper Gillies and Paul Poirier, Canadian senior ladies bronze medallist Alaine Chartrand, Canadian junior men's champion and 14-year-old skating phenom Nam Nguyen, and two-time Canadian world team members and international skating stars Sean Rice and Jodeyne Higgins. Rice and Higgins will be joined by their touring cast mates, Swedish and Polish national champions Alexandra Shauman and Lukasz Rozycki. Ticket prices range from $15 to $50 and are available from the Skate Oakville office. A portion of proceeds from the April 7 show will be donated to help fund the building of Oakville's new hospital. Skate Oakville alumni are currently being contacted for a special alumni reception that weekend as well. S T A R S I N S C A R B O R O U G H Halton will host 2014 OFSAA field hockey Oakville high school teams won't have to travel very far if they qualify for next year's provincial field hockey championships. Halton was recently announced as the host for the 2014 Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations tournament. Burlington's Nelson Stadium will be the main venue and host for the semifinals and final on the last day of the tournament, which will feature 14-16 teams. Games will also be played at two other Burlington high schools, Alton Village and Assumption, which feature artificial turf. The tournament is slated for Nov. 6-8, 2014. Burlington Central is the host school, though Trojans coach Andrew Brennan said bidding to host OFSAA had little to do with boosting his team's chances of qualifying for provincials. "The calibre of play in Halton has gone up dramatically over the last few years," said Brennan, the tournament convener. "I thought it would be great for Halton to showcase its facilities and promote the sport within the region. "It's a sport that I knew nothing about prior to when I started coaching, to tell you the truth," he added. "I've sort of fallen in love with the sport and I just want to do right by it in Halton." The Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils and Burlington's Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Nelson Lords have traditionally dominated field hockey at the Halton level and also fared well provincially. Nelson won OFSAA bronze last fall and the Red Devils were third in 2012. OT finished fourth at the 2011 tournament. With breaking even financially being the goal, Brennan is welcoming sponsors for the tournament. Brennan can be reached by e-mail at brennana@hdsb.ca or on Twitter @ OFSAAFH2014. -- With files from Kevin Nagel, Metroland West Media Group The Oakville minor bantam white Cobras won the championship at a recent house league select hockey tournament in Scarborough.
