www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, March 21, 2013 | 22 Oakville MP Terence Young is supporting a Health Canada proposal to strengthen warnings about the dangers of tanning beds. The proposed changes would require all tanning beds to display a health warning decal with the following message: `Not recommended for use by those under 18 years of age' and `Tanning equipment can cause cancer,' as well as a bulleted list of other health risks associated with tanning. Young noted that according to the World Health Oakville MP supports banning youths from tanning beds Organization (WHO), the risk of developing melanoma increases by 75 per cent when use of tanning beds starts before the age of 35. "Young adults should be concerned about the health risks associated with the use of tanning beds, including skin cancer. The changes Health Canada is proposing would require all tanning beds to display a health warning label to remind Canadians of those risks." Health Canada regulates the sale, lease and import of tanning beds under the Radiation Emitting Devices Act and Regulations. However, Young said, the regulation of tanning bed use in commercial establishments, including age restrictions, falls under the jurisdiction of the provinces and territories. He is therefore urging the Province of Ontario to follow through on its recent commitment to join other provinces/territories that ban access to tanning equipment by minors. "British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Québec have all banned youths from using this dangerous equipment. There's no reason Ontario couldn't do the same. I am pleased to hear they are planning Health "Connected to your Community" Worry-free Retirement Living In the Heart of Clarkson to act," he said. The Province announced earlier this month that it had introduced a bill to ban indoor tanning for youths under the age of 18. Oakville became the first municipality in Ontario to ban tanning for teens back in August. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, but it's also one of the most preventable. The 75-day public comment period on Health Canada's draft proposal will be completed in early May and the proposed regulatory changes are expected to be posted to Canada Gazette, Part II later this year.
