www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Wednesday, April 3, 2013 | 4 New rules now in effect for Halton garbage pickup Effective this week, Halton residents can add more items to their blue box and must use tags for garbage above the new three-bag/can limit. Halton residents can add more items to their blue box, including clear plastic clamshells (berry and lettuce containers, for example), single-serve yogurt cups, and plastic plant pots and trays. Residents can also pick up a new larger blue box to accommodate the new materials. They can be picked up at the Halton Regional Centre, 1151 Bronte Rd., in Oakville or the Halton Waste Management Site (Scalehouse), 5400 R.R. 25 in Milton. Residents may place three garbage bags/cans or less at the curb every other week. More than three garbage bags/ cans will require a garbage tag. Up to a total of six garbage bags/cans (three untagged, three tagged) can be placed curbside every other week. The maximum weight per garbage bag/can is 23 kilograms (50 pounds). To help residents transition to the new garbage limit, complimentary garbage tags are now available. The tags can be used until Sept. 7. Starting Sept. 9, garbage tags will cost $2 per tag and can only be purchased in sheets of five tags ($10 per sheet). The tags are available at select retail locations and municipal buildings throughout Halton and online at www. halton.ca/garbagetags. Residents can use their GreenCart for food scraps and compostable papers like paper towels and hot beverage paper cups. "Halton residents continue to be among the best in the province when it comes to participating in waste diversion programs like recycling and composting, increasing the residential diversion rate in Halton from 40 per cent in 2007 to 60 per cent, but there is still more we can do," said Gary Carr, Halton Regional chair. Youths not facing charges after downtown graffiti spree Halton police apprehended three Oakville youths early Monday morning after numerous buildings in the downtown core were vandalized with graffiti. Police were called to the area of Trafalgar Road and Lakeshore Road at 2:55 a.m. after residents spotted someone they believed was trying to break into a local business. When police arrived, they discovered three 15-year-old boys who were in the process of `tagging' random buildings. The youths, who cannot be named because of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, were apprehended. Police said the boys will not be criminally charged, but will be required to participate in a diversion program for youths. As part of the program, police said, the boys will assist police by showing them other locations where they spray painted tags over the last three months. Removing these tags may also be part of the rehabilitation process.
