Do you have the desire to be a role model for younger high school students? If so, then the Oakville Trafalgar High School peer-tutoring program is right for you. In this course, you will transition from a student to a peer mentor. OT has had the peer-tutoring program for Grade 11-12 students for 10 years to help students acquire skills in leadership and peer support roles. Students can peer mentor in a Grade 9 or 10 class that they are interested in. A peer tutor is responsible for helping the teacher and more importantly giving the students another person to assist them in the classroom. Students relate well to peer tutors as they are only one or two years older and may feel more comfortable asking questions and seeking help from them. The peer tutor's main purpose is to guide students in the classroom. Students have someone to talk to about the everyday stress of high school, receive assistance in their homework and with learning concepts. Peer tutors are placed in a large variety of classes such as phys-ed, math, English, French, and business. In each class there are different responsibilities that the peer tutor has to fulfill. Peer tutors may keep class calendars, lead warm-up games, take up homework, or work individually with students who need to catch up on lessons. Tutors are also involved with leading groups in collaborative learning activities. Peer tutoring is not only a great selfimprovement program but it also provides a school credit for graduating students. For evaluation, students write weekly logs detailing what they did in the classroom each day. Students also write reflections that allow them to think critically about their experiences in the classroom. Their final class project is to design a lesson plan and teach their class a new concept. "This course helped develop the interpersonal skills that can benefit me for future job employment. You learn a lot about the importance of being reliable and responsible, which will help me in other courses and post-secondary education," said Grade 11 peer tutor Kia Fung. Peer tutoring is a life-changing course that allows students to become role models and lead their peers. It allows students to help others on their road to success while helping themselves succeed as well. Please visit the Oakville Trafalgar High School website for more information on this course.
