Always be prepared for an emergency: Red Cross The Canadian Red Cross wants families to be prepared for potential emergencies in the community by building their own kit during Emergency Preparedness Week, May 5-11. "Everyone has the power to help themselves and their families to minimize the effect of a disaster by preparing a disaster kit," Jennifer Faulknor, Red Cross disaster management volunteer, said in a press release. The Red Cross recommends everyone should prepare to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours following a disaster. That can be done by creating an emergency preparedness kit. "If there is a disaster in the middle of the night, such as a house fire, you won't have time to collect any belongings," Faulknor said. "Having a ready-to-go kit containing essential documents, medication, cash and other items can ensure the health and safety of your family during a stressful time." The Red Cross offers the following checklist to help families put together a home disaster kit: · flashlight and batteries · radio and batteries (or a wind-up radio) · toilet paper and personal supplies · important papers such as ID and personal documents · canned food, bottled water, and a manual can opener · replace food and batteries once each year · one change of clothing and shoes · blankets or sleeping bags · extra car keys and cash · a whistle to attract attention · first-aid kit · medication The Canadian Red Cross also provides free emergency personal preparedness workshops in the community during the year.
